Choosing  Your Photographer

Selecting a photographer based solely on their packages and prices will only make you crazy.  I understand that price is an important factor,  but to make your decision easier look for other intangible qualities.  A photographer with things like a good personality, experience and organization will help make your wedding day a much more pleasurable experience.  Lookout for photographers who don't listen to or respect your ideas.  They may try to change the way that you want your wedding day to flow and even demand that things are done their way (the right way).  Yes, an experienced professional will know how certain things are done best, but a good photographer will listen to your ideas and then offer suggestions on how you may want to improve them.

Here are 10 questions you should get specific answers to before retaining a photographers services

1-  Who will be our photographer-  It may sound like a silly question, but some companies employ several photographers or sale representatives.  Be sure that you are looking at sample work of your photographer.

2-  Experience-  How much experience does the photographer have, both in photography and weddings.  Every person is different, but it usually takes about 2 years and 60 weddings for a photographer the gain the skills and confidence to cover a wedding well.  Further experience will allow him to make better decisions quickly and adjust to adverse circumstances.

3-  Full time or part time-  There are many wedding photographers who work a different job during the week. Look for a full time photographer, or even better a wedding specialist.  You will get much better service from someone who keeps regular office hours and is just a phone call away to answer any questions that come up.  Full time photographers generally spend more time perfecting their craft than a part-timer.

4-  What is your style-  Ask about their style, does his response match the samples and what you are looking for.  How versatile is he,  you will need a combination of photojournalistic and traditional styles to tell the complete story of you wedding day.  How does he prefer to shoot family, wedding party, reception photos etc.

5-  What type of cameras are used and why-  Do they use medium format,  35 mm,  digital or a combination. Do they choose the equipment for its high quality prints, versatility or just because its what your suppose to shoot weddings with.  The type of camera that yields the best quality is a completely different article, you can judge for yourself if the quality is up to your standards.

6-  What type of lighting is used-  You should be looking for diffused multiple lighting.  This style mimics studio lighting which gives you the most flattering results.  Some may say that multiple lights are to cumbersome and distracting for a wedding.  That is just an excuse,  there are small inconspicuous lights that yield great results with much less space and effort.

7-  What do you wear-  Get a specific answer on what the photographer feels most comfortable wearing.  If it is important to you that he is in a tux, or you get a vague answer about the usual attire, get it in writing on the contract.

8-  How long do pictures take to deliver-  This answer can vary greatly.  Proofs can take anywhere from 1 day to several weeks,  bridal albums can take from 2 weeks to 6 months.  Remember, you can't rush quality.  Again, if it's important to you get it in writing.

9-  Extra charges-  Some photographers charge more money after the wedding for extras and hidden items  than they do for the initial package.  Be sure you understand what you are getting (and not getting) for the price your paying.  Also ask about the payment policy.  Most studios allow you to make payments up until the wedding day, some even let you carry a small balance until you've seen your photos.  Don't forget, get it in writing.

10-  Why should we choose you-  Look for a specific answer here, not something vague like "because we're the best" (why are you the best).  By this point you probably already feel comfortable with the quality of the pictures so "we take great pictures" isn't very helpful either.  You should get an answer that directly benefits you,  something like "because we are full time wedding specialists,  we are always here to answer your questions or offer advice.  Our pre-wedding photo planner will allow you to spend less time in front of the camera and more time enjoying you day with family and friends.  And most importantly, we will help you in any way that we can, that's why we're here!"
